Today's Flowers

I was headed to Maxwell Arboretum hoping to find some Columbine blooming. As I passed the Nebraska Game and Parks Building I saw a lovely garden of blooming Columbine.

Today's Flowers & Mellow Yellow

Last Wednesday and Thursday were beautiful spring days. In the 70’s, and nary a cloud to be seen. Friday was in the 80’s and a bit too warm for my liking for April. I had a couple of appointments in the morning, met a friend for lunch and did a bunch of errands. I thought about going to my favorite flower picture spots, but I wasn’t dressed for crawling around to get flower pictures, so I decided to pass. The weather forecast for Saturday was for 60’s and I figured that would be just fine. Well, so much for weather forecasts. It never got out of the 40’s, wind chill was in the upper 30’s, it was misting off and on, and this wuss decided not to sally forth. After all, the weather was supposed to be better today. Ha Today has been showers and occasional thunder and lightning.

All of that is a long story to say that these flower pictures were taken last week. These daffodils were at Sunken Gardens. Since they are yellow, I’m cross posting in the Mellow Yellow meme also.

Today's Flowers

Friday afternoon when I was coming home from Squaw Creek NWR I decided to take a detour from the interstate and visit Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska. It’s been years since I was in the park and I wanted to see if it was worth a specific trip to spend a day there. My conclusion was a definite yes. My time was limited so I didn’t take many photos. One of the photos I did take was of these Dutchmen’s Breeches.

Saturday I did my weekly visit to Maxwell Arboretum. Love this pink Magnolia

And these Virginia Bluebells

Those of you who have visited previously may have noticed that I have done some “remodeling”. I have long felt constrained by the small photos that the old template allowed for. However, this morning I wondered if the larger photos make the blog load slowly for those on dial-up. Anyone that has an opinion can feel free to weigh in on the subject in the comments. If it makes it too slow, I'll see what I can do to adjust accordingly.

Today's Flowers--Hyacinth

A year ago this weekend, I was home recuperating from a surgery performed the previous Friday. By Tuesday, I was back in the hospital, and on Wednesday enduring yet another surgery. As a result, last year I missed all the spring flowers, and many other things. So, to say I’m enjoying getting out and seeing the spring flowers this year is a mild understatement.

Today's Flowers

Aaah, it appears spring has sprung….

Today’s photos were all taken yesterday afternoon.

The daffodil was taken at Sunken Gardens.

The remaining photos were taken at Maxwell Arboretum. Maxwell Arboretum is on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

I don’t know what kind of flowers these are, but they were pretty and very dainty. Any help identifying them would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: It was bugging me not to have id's on the three flowers so I did some research today (which I should have done before I posted the photos). Anyway, the purple flower is a Glory of the Snow, the white one is a Common Snowdrop which Babooshka id'd, and the blue and white one is a Striped Squill (what a strange name!)

Today's Flowers--A Dewy Sunflower

It's been a lovely sunny day, so a Sunflower seems appropriate

Today's Flowers

Still no flowers to photograph here, so into the vaults we go!

This water lily was photgraphed at the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln.

The Sunken Gardens was built in 1930 on an old 1.5 acre neighborhood landfill site in the heart of Lincoln. The sunken gardens were made in a depression (hence their name) and were originally known as Lincoln's 'Rock Garden', which described their design. The project was developped as an opportunity for unemployed men to earn money to support their families through the difficult economic circumstances.
[..]
After nearly 73 years without a major renovation, the Sunken Gardens was overhauled in 2004.

Major streets are on two sides of the gardens, but because it is a sunken garden it is still a lovely oasis.

As the year progresses, you will most likely see many more photos from the Sunken Gardens.

Today's Flowers--Wildflowers in Texas

I took these photos about two weeks ago at Brazoria NWR. When I saw the first wildflower, I thought it was Indian Paintbrush, but while taking the photo, I wasn't so sure. I've looked through several sources, and am still not sure.

I saw these little guys while the dawg was stretching her legs. They are really small. I was as close as my macro lens would allow me to get. Haven't figured out a name for them either.

Today's Flower

Today's Flower is an Iris. These Iris photos were taken at the Pfister Iris Garden. The garden is located on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska. The garden was started as a result of memorial gifts to UNL in the 1980s for the purpose of establishing an iris collection. It now includes more than 150 varieties of award-winning and named iris varieties.

Today's Flowers

For the past week I've highlighted photos from the Nebraska Sandhills area. I hope you've enjoyed the tour.

Two posts down I highlighted three insects that I found in one little flower patch. Today's Flowers post will highlight one of the flowers in that patch. It seems to have several names. Hoary vervain, wooly verbena, also spelled in some places woolly verbena.

I have read that Plains Indians made a tea from the leaves and used it to treat stomachaches. Prairie chickens and small mammals eat the seeds. It is very drought-resistant, with roots that can descend to 12 feet. Cattle will not consume it due to its bitter taste so it spreads in overgrazed pastures.

Today's Flowers

As we enter the period of the year that for many include gray skies, weak sunlight at best, barren trees, and flower beds that are mulched over, it puts a smile on one's face seeing flower pictures.

This photo of two lotus and a lotus bud is among my all time favorites. It was taken at Lincoln's Sunken Gardens.
